Especially for sluggish digestion or occasional constipation, warm water can therefore be a simple, supportive measure for relief.

In contrast, very cold water can temporarily slow down the digestive process, as the body first has to expend energy to bring the liquid to body temperature.

Warm water, however, is closer to body temperature and can therefore be absorbed more quickly by the organism. At the same time, the warmth promotes blood circulation in the digestive tract, which can facilitate the transport of nutrients and the removal of metabolic products.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, warm water is ideally drunk slowly and in small sips. If each sip remains briefly in the mouth before being swallowed, the body can better perceive and absorb the liquid. This mindful way of drinking supports the digestive effect and simultaneously strengthens awareness of one’s own bodily needs.

Hot Water to Promote Healthy Digestion

Water plays a fundamental role in healthy and strong digestion. Too little or cold liquid harms the digestive fire Agni and can extinguish it. Your body also needs six hours to digest cold water, while it only needs one and a half hours for warm water (2).

Hot water thus particularly stimulates Agni and promotes digestion. This allows accumulated toxins and waste products to be more easily transported out of your body. This, in turn, positively affects your recovery and supports your body’s cleansing.

Drinking Warm Water in Ayurveda

By boiling water in Ayurveda, energies are released and stored in the water molecules. These are then directly transferred to your body when the water is consumed. This practice has been implemented in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

Additionally, prolonged boiling makes the water chemically thinner. This now thinner and short-chain Ayurvedic water is better able to transport water-soluble toxins and metabolic residues out of your body.

The ideal drinking temperature in Ayurveda is between 104 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (40 and 60 degrees Celsius). The water is warm enough to stimulate metabolic processes, but not so hot that it irritates the mucous membranes.

All food components that cannot be converted into energy remain in your body as metabolic residues. In Ayurveda, this is referred to as Ama, which, from an Ayurvedic perspective, is the beginning of every illness. Ayurvedic warm water can help eliminate these from your body more effectively.

Boiling also purifies the water and changes its structure. For example, lime is crystallized and evaporates. The warmth additionally helps more effectively in eliminating metabolic residues in the digestive tract. The digestive fire Agni is also supported in its work by warm Ayurvedic water. Afterwards, you will feel better and have more energy!

Balancing Doshas with Hot Water

Your constitutional type also plays an important role in the correct intake of water. Depending on the three Doshas, you should boil your water for different lengths of time and enrich it with various spices. You can find out which Dosha dominates in you with the Dosha Test.

Generally, in Ayurveda, water is always boiled for at least 10 minutes, although distinctions are made between the individual Doshas here as well.

Vata types should boil the water for 10 minutes until it has reduced by a quarter in the pot.

Pitta individuals for about 15 minutes, until one-third has evaporated.

Kapha individuals should boil the water for about 20 minutes, until only half remains.

Although in Ayurveda, warm water should be drunk plain in the morning, you can add the following herbs and spices depending on your constitution. This gives the warm water flavor and additionally provides your body with healthy nutrients. The following time specifications refer to already boiled water:

The Vata type should boil one and a half liters of water for five minutes. Ayurvedic cuisine is already very rich in spices and herbs, which could potentially overwhelm the body with increased intake.

Depending on the meal, about one cup of water is recommended per meal. For liquid dishes like soup or dhal, less fluid intake is sufficient. For dry dishes, however, you should compensate with more water. Pay attention to the recommended water temperature based on your constitution. You should avoid consuming (ice-)cold water to prevent extinguishing your digestive fire.

Drinking Warm Water in the Evening: Does It Help with Sleep?

Yes, and not just in Ayurveda: A small cup of warm water about an hour before bed calms the parasympathetic nervous system and signals to the body that it’s time to rest.

The warmth relaxes muscles and can help release the day’s stress. Vata types, who tend to have racing thoughts and sleep disturbances, particularly benefit from this.

It’s important to keep the amount small in the evening. Too much fluid shortly before bed leads to nighttime bathroom trips and interrupts restful sleep. Optionally, you can add some honey to the warm water; it also has a calming effect.

Discover the Detox Cures at Sonnhof Now

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Hot Water in Ayurveda

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Why should one drink hot water in Ayurveda?

In Ayurveda, hot water strengthens the digestive fire Agni and dissolves accumulated metabolic residues (Ama). It is absorbed by the body faster than cold water and promotes detoxification. Therefore, it is considered a daily basic ritual in Ayurvedic teachings.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How hot should the water be in Ayurveda?

The ideal drinking temperature is between 104 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (40 and 60 degrees Celsius). Water that is too hot can irritate the mucous membranes, while water that is too cool weakens the digestive fire. Lukewarm to hot – depending on the Dosha type – is the Ayurvedic recommendation.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How much warm water should one drink per day?

In Ayurveda, it is recommended to drink the prepared warm water throughout the day, taking a few sips approximately every 30 minutes. The total amount depends on constitutional type, age, season, and physical activity.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can you drink warm water in the evening?

Yes, a small cup of warm water about an hour before bedtime calms the nervous system, relaxes muscles, and promotes more restful sleep. This can induce a pleasant feeling of calm and tiredness.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Is boiled water healthier than regular water?

In Ayurveda, yes – for two reasons: On the one hand, germs and residues are reduced during boiling; on the other hand, the structure of the water changes. It becomes short-chained and thinner, which facilitates the elimination of toxins.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which cure at Sonnhof is suitable for comprehensive detoxification?

Our Detox Cure and Panchakarma Cure rely on Ayurvedic hot water as a daily cleansing ritual.
