Panchakarma Cure in Austria – Process, Duration, and Variants

At Sonnhof in Thiersee, the classic Ayurvedic Panchakarma Cure is offered with a European adaptation. Panchakarma means “five actions” in Sanskrit and refers to five traditional elimination procedures used in Ayurveda to release and remove deep-seated toxins (Ama) from the body.

The five classic cleansing procedures are:

  • Vamana: therapeutically guided emesis for the elimination of Kapha-related deposits, especially in the upper digestive tract
  • Virechana: a controlled purgation therapy that eliminates excess Pitta energy and toxins from the liver and intestines
  • Basti: medicinal enemas with oils or herbal decoctions, primarily effective for Vata disorders and in the musculoskeletal system
  • Nasya: the administration of oils or herbal powders through the nose to cleanse the head and neck area and calm the nervous system
  • Raktamokshana: a bloodletting procedure for “blood purification,” used in the original Indian tradition to treat certain skin and blood conditions

Panchakarma Cure Process at Sonnhof

Every Panchakarma Cure at Sonnhof follows the same structure, whether you stay for 7 or 28 nights. The length of your stay only determines how much time is allocated to each phase. The daily indications refer to a 7-night cure.

Day 1: Arrival, anamnesis and pulse diagnosis. Your room is ready for occupancy from 2 PM. The first consultation with anamnesis, pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, and body analysis takes approximately 45 minutes. From this, the team creates your therapy plan for all subsequent days.

Days 2 to 4: Preparation with Snehana and Svedana. In the morning, you take ghee on an empty stomach. This is followed by the 50- or 75-minute Abhyanga full-body oil massage, often performed by four hands. From day 3, heat applications such as the Ayurvedic steam bath Swedana are added. Per treatment day, you receive one to two treatments of 50 minutes each (may vary depending on the cure), mostly in the morning. In addition, three to five yoga and meditation sessions are available daily.

Day 5: Main cleansing with Virechana. On the cleansing day, there is no massage, making it the only day of the cure without one. In the morning, you drink a herbal laxative, and the Ayurveda team documents the eliminations. If necessary, Nasya, a cleansing of the forehead, sinuses, and head area, complements the elimination. For stays of 14 nights or more, the therapy plan may include a second cleansing phase, and Basti can then be administered as a series over several days.

From Day 6: Rebuilding phase and final consultation. The diet slowly rebuilds, starting with Kitchari, then soups and steamed vegetables. Oil applications, Basti with herbal oils, and Marma and foot massages strengthen the tissues. On the day of departure, your Ayurveda doctor re-examines your pulse in the final consultation and provides recommendations on diet, daily rhythm, and herbs. Sonnhof considers the first two to three weeks at home as part of the cure.

The scope varies by cure variant: Panchakarma “Light” includes 6 treatment days with 12 applications and 3 consultations, “The Classic” includes 9 treatment days with 18 applications and 3 consultations.

FAQs about the Panchakarma Cure

What is an Ayurveda Panchakarma Cure?

Panchakarma is an intensive cleansing and regeneration cure that deeply releases and eliminates toxins from the tissues. The name means “five actions” in Sanskrit and stands for classic elimination procedures that renew body, mind, and soul on all levels.

At Sonnhof, every Panchakarma Cure begins with a medical pulse diagnosis and an individually tailored treatment plan for lasting effects.

A Panchakarma Cure at Sonnhof in Tyrol lasts between 7 and 28 days – depending on the desired intensity and duration. We offer various cures, all of which start with an individual pulse diagnosis and include treatments tailored to you and your constitution.

The Panchakarma Cure at European Ayurveda® is divided into three phases. The cure begins with an individual pulse diagnosis, upon which the treatments are subsequently based.

You start with a pre-detoxification phase, during which you release Ama (slags/toxins) with a light Ayurvedic diet and peelings.

In the cleansing phase, these are eliminated, and in the final rebuilding phase, you strengthen your immune system with Ayurvedic treatments and a tailored diet.

A professional Panchakarma Cure at Sonnhof costs from approximately €2,200 (plus room rate). This includes the consultation and pulse diagnosis, as well as all treatments tailored to you and the meals. Spa use and participation in yoga and meditation sessions are also included.

A Panchakarma Cure at Sonnhof costs from €2,200 plus the room rate. The price includes pulse diagnosis, consultation, all individually tailored treatments, meals, as well as spa, yoga, and meditation.

Diet is a central part of the Panchakarma Cure. In our house, we serve a Tridosha diet specially adapted for the cure. It primarily consists of light, warm food suitable for detoxifying the body.

The focus is on easily digestible, cooked meals that spare the digestive fire (Agni) and support elimination – such as Kitchari, soups, grain dishes, and herbal teas.

Alcohol, coffee, raw food, and sugar are avoided during the cure. All meals at Sonnhof are vegetarian, predominantly organic, and primarily prepared with products from the family’s own farm. There is an option to eat fish.

For cure preparation, we recommend drinking plenty of fluids (preferably warm water) and eating wholesome, warm meals without distractions. Have your main meal at midday and only light food in the evening, such as soup or warm vegetables.

You should avoid sugar and coffee – it’s best to gradually reduce your consumption. You should also eat very little meat. Take time to mindfully observe your thoughts and consciously unwind in the evening with small rituals.

A Panchakarma Cure is best suited when you want to deeply detoxify to bring body, mind, and soul into harmony. It can support chronic illnesses, digestive problems, stress, or strengthen the immune system.

It can be particularly beneficial after surgery or infection, for pain, psychological stress, or persistent physical complaints such as hair loss and joint pain. A cure can help regain more energy in daily life and feel lighter.

You can also perform a Panchakarma Cure at home. For this, we recommend our book “The 7-Day Panchakarma Cure for Home” which actress Andrea Kathrin Loewig published in collaboration with European Ayurveda® pioneer Elisabeth Mauracher and Ayurveda physician Gaurav Sharma.

The cure is suitable for chronic fatigue, stress, and sleep problems, for digestive and metabolic disorders, as well as for joint and back pain. It also supports regeneration after surgery or an infection. For those wishing to conceive, it is possible after consultation with the medical team.

The cure is not suitable during pregnancy and acute infections. For pre-existing conditions or long-term medication, please clarify the cure with a doctor beforehand. Stays at Sonnhof are possible from 16 years of age.
