Ayurveda detoxification, purification, detox programs – whatever you may call it, everyone benefits from an occasional cleansing of the liver and kidneys. In our article, you will learn how you can perform a small purification program from home and which home remedies can help.
Is an Ayurvedic Detox Program Healthy?
When it comes to detoxing, skeptics quickly ask what the point is. “Schlacken” (metabolic waste) is not a conventional medical term, so criticism at this point is justified. However, anyone who has ever completed a detox phase knows: such a purification certainly cannot do any harm.
Because during detoxification, biochemical waste products are to be eliminated that have accumulated in the body – sometimes over years. This colloquial metabolic waste is called Ayurveda Ama, which literally translates to “undigested.”
In other words: when the digestive fire Agni has too much to do because we eat the wrong foods, waste products accumulate in the body. These can harm the body in the long run – which is why they should be removed.

Ayurveda Detox: Procedure and Effectiveness of Ayurvedic Detoxification
In our hectic and fast-paced world, there is often no time for healthy and wholesome food. With an Ayurveda Detox program, your body is detoxified, your soul can breathe again, and your mind can focus on the essentials once more.
Goals of Ayurveda Detox
The spring season is particularly well-suited for Ayurvedic detoxification – simply free yourself from the heaviness of winter with a detox program after the holidays!
Detox is more important than ever! In an Ayurveda purification program, we can also counteract those toxins that enter our body from the outside. These can be hormones, medications, or pollutants in the air and drinking water.

“Ayurvedic detoxification does not mean overtaxing the body, but rather relieving it in a targeted manner. This allows for new lightness, clarity, and noticeable regeneration to emerge.”
Elisabeth Naschberger-Mauracher, European Ayurveda Expert & Managing Director of the European Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof in Tyrol
The goals of an Ayurvedic detox program are therefore:
- Eliminate toxins from the body and return to balance
- Weight loss through gentle fasting
- Reduce stress: free the mind and soul from emotional baggage
- Strengthen the immune system
Theoretically, a healthy body can handle this burden reasonably well, but as a preventive measure and for lasting well-being, regular detoxification is highly recommended. Because waiting until it is too late is always the wrong way to go when it comes to health.
Ultimately, a detox program brings you significantly more energy, simply because your Agni experiences new drive. It is also part of the Longevity program, which supports your healthy longevity.

As a side effect, many people can also lose weight. However, this should not be the main goal of purification.
After all, you don’t want to chase some ideal of beauty, but rather do something good for your body out of your own motivation.
The Role of the Liver in Ayurveda Detox
The liver is known as the detoxification organ par excellence. The cytochrome P450-dependent enzymes in particular are involved in the detoxification process. Liver enzyme levels can be determined as part of a blood test.
The physician can then recognize, for example, if there is poisoning from alcohol, liver inflammation, or other diseases.
A detox program can support the liver in freeing the body of toxins. However, it is important that the program is tailored to you and your needs.
Methods of Ayurvedic Detoxification: Eliminating Toxins in 2 Days
There are many methods for purification and just as many detox plans. Whether you want to detox at home or undergo a detox program at Sonnhof under professional guidance is, of course, entirely up to you.
Crucial for the success of your detox days is, first and foremost, to detoxify your liver and intestines by stimulating the digestive fire. Effective purification also includes regular exercise, as this promotes metabolism.
It is possible that you will have less energy during the detoxification phase, so you should not overexert yourself physically. A little walking, swimming, or a relaxing yoga session is absolutely sufficient.

Detoxing works better the less stress you have. Perhaps you can even take a few days off for the detoxification – but of course, not everyone has this option.
Therefore, the more you have on your schedule in the near future, the more important relaxing yoga exercises and a shorter purification period become. This also ensures a relaxed Mental Detox.
A detox plan is usually helpful for detoxification. Because to endure the entire purification phase, a bit of discipline is sometimes necessary, and a fixed daily routine helps with this. Whether you set this plan for 2, 3, 5, 10, or 14 days is entirely your decision.
However, if you would like to purify and cleanse your body under professional guidance, we would like to recommend the queen of Ayurvedic programs: the Panchakarma program.
Procedure of a Professional Ayurveda Detox Program
If you decide on a professional detoxification program, you will be accompanied by Ayurveda experts at every step. The program proceeds as follows:
- Consultation with pulse diagnosis and planning of the individually tailored program
- Preparation phase: Strengthening the body
- Cleansing phase: Fasting and elimination of toxins from the body
- Building phase: Slow restoration of normal metabolism
In a consultation, your Dosha type is first determined. In addition, you will work together to tailor the detox program to your needs and wishes.
In the subsequent preparation phase, your body is prepared for purification with tonic elixirs and a special Ayurvedic diet. This is followed by the cleansing phase, in which the body is relieved and freed from metabolic waste through fasting with light rice soup, Kitchari, and plenty of hot water.
Individual Ayurveda treatments additionally eliminate toxins from your body. These treatments include, for example, specially tailored Ayurveda massages such as Abhyanga or Marma massage, Shirodhara (oil forehead pour), as well as yoga and meditation. At the end, you will feel physically and mentally strengthened and full of lightness!
Before you return to everyday life, you finally slowly rebuild your metabolism during the building days. Gentle food, light exercise, and a slow transition back to daily life are part of this phase. In our book, you will find many tips, recipes, and instructions for a Panchakarma program at home.

Ayurveda Detoxification for Home: Suitable Home Remedies
Not only in the country of origin of Ayurveda, but also in this country, there is an increasing recommendation to detoxify the body. Nutrition plays a decisive role in this. But which foods are also a sensible method for detoxing at home in the Ayurvedic diet?

These home remedies can actually help detoxify your body:
Ayurvedic beverages:
- warm water

- dandelion leaves
- Pepper: Black pepper in particular cleanses the stomach well and helps with intestinal cleansing. Important: It should be added to food freshly ground.

- Manjistha: Supports the lymphatic system in a natural way and can thus help to purify naturally.

Purification Program for Home: Recipes and Tips
You can perform your detoxification program under guidance, but it is also possible to simply include a few detox days at home. A tea detox, delicious detox recipes, or purifying foot baths can already achieve a lot.
Detoxing with Detox Tea
Herbal teas are an optimal method to stimulate the digestive organs. Bitter substances, such as those found in nettle, dandelion, or burdock root tea, are particularly helpful.

You can also purify wonderfully with linden blossom tea, and the tried-and-tested ginger water or ginger tea is an Ayurveda classic anyway that always works!
To prepare hot water with ginger, you will need:
- 1 liter of water
- if necessary, 2 slices (approx. 0.5 cm wide) of ginger
First, wash the ginger well (you don’t need to peel it) and put it together with the water in a sufficiently large pot. Boil the water for at least 15 minutes. Finally, pour the finished ginger water into a thermos and drink it throughout the day.
However, when purifying with tea, it should not be about simply drinking just any tea. For example, you should avoid black and green tea, as these varieties contain caffeine. Chamomile tea should also stay in the cupboard during your detox days, as it slows down your digestion.
With any purification program, it is fundamentally important to drink a lot. It should be at least 3 liters per day, with warm water or herbal teas being most suitable.
Your metabolism also gets a kickstart if you drink a glass of warm water with 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice and honey in small sips immediately after waking up. Nothing then stands in the way of an energy-filled start.
Detox Recipes for the Detoxification Program: Vegetable Soup and Kitchari
Following a plan for purification is a good idea because it gives you good orientation. On the other hand, it is not necessarily sensible to set up a strict detox plan with very specific recipes.
Detox is also always something individual: There is no universal method because toxins accumulate for different reasons in every person and everyone has a different Dosha.
We would therefore like to give you a basic recipe for a delicious soup that you can try at any time and that also tastes very good in modified forms.
You will need:
- 250 g carrots
- 1 zucchini
- 1 leek
- 1 tbsp olive oil or ghee
- 1 liter vegetable broth
Briefly sauté the vegetables and then let them simmer in the broth for about ten minutes. You will then have a strengthening soup that sensibly supports the purification process.

Also Kitchari is a popular and delicious Ayurveda detox recipe for the office. You will need:
- 5 cups water
- 1 cup basmati rice
- ½ cup mung beans
- 2 tsp ghee
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground coriander
- ½ tsp ground cumin
First, wash the rice and mung beans well and put them in a pot. Toast them lightly and then add the ghee and spices. After toasting briefly, fill the pot with the water and let the Kitchari simmer for about 30 minutes until the rice is cooked through.
At the end, add the lemon juice and season the dish with salt. You can also add a little vegetable as needed.
Tips for Your Detox Nutrition
Make sure not to overtax the Agni in the first days of the detox program. Specifically, this means: on the first purification day, eat only a maximum of one quarter of the usual amount and only then slowly increase in the following days.

If you get too hungry in between, you can fall back on rice water or freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices.
Nutrition is one of the main reasons why toxins or metabolic waste accumulate in the body in the first place. This happens when we eat too richly, sugary, one-sidedly, and fatty.
If toxins in the form of alcohol and nicotine are then added regularly, the digestive organs are completely overwhelmed.
So try especially during detoxification to avoid alcohol, nicotine, sugar, meat, white flour products, and caffeine. Instead, reach for plenty of fruits and vegetables such as kale, apples, beets, and spices such as coriander or cinnamon. Overall, the food should be as alkaline as possible to counteract acidification.
Detoxifying the Body with a Foot Bath
The skin is the largest organ of our body. Conveniently, we can also excrete Ama through it, specifically through the soles of our feet. These are often even referred to as “second kidneys.” Daily foot baths with the following ingredients or properties help to successfully eliminate toxins from the body:
- 1 tbsp alkaline bath salt
- Water with a temperature of 37–40 °C
- 30–60 minutes bathing time
Do not be surprised: the initially clear foot bath water will be darkly colored at the end. This is because the electrically charged ions in the water oxidize. Some even suspect that the dark color is caused by the toxins.
You can, of course, extend the foot bath to a full bath. Only during pregnancy or with open wounds and skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis should you avoid the bath method.
As you can see, there are many simple methods to successfully detoxify the body. Plenty of hot water and herbal teas, alkaline foods, exercise, and relaxation: if you regularly treat your body to a detoxification, it will quickly thank you!
